We teach pupils in the areas of English, Maths Reading, Writing, Spelling and Comprehension at Primary and Secondary level. We also offer tuition to help prepare your child for exams such as the Kent Test (11+) end of year exams, Key Stage SAT’s and GCSE English and Maths.

What ages of children do you teach?

We teach students between the ages of 5 to 16 years old.

Does Kip McGrath Ashford help prepare students for exams?

We do exam preparation for the Grammar School Entrance tests (11+) end of year exams and GCSE Maths and English. For the best chance of success please contact us well before the test. We are not a “crammer” style business.

Will my child improve with tuition?

Your child will improve if they are supported at school, home and at Kip McGrath Ashford. Children that attend tutoring each week and attempt all of their set homework will improve – both academically and in self-confidence.

How long will it take?

Every child is different and every problem is different. Your child’s progress will be monitored with continuous ongoing assessment. The assessment ensures that as teachers we can understand the rate of progression your child is making and constantly ensure the work is at the correct level.

Do you provide feedback?

We will also provide weekly parental feedback. Most often the questions we get asked aren’t always about the work done that night, school issues and how they learn at school are most common. As teachers we understand the system of how schools and teachers work and what happens on a daily basis.

Can you tutor my child with a disability?

I was the lead Mathematics teacher in a SEN unit in a mainstream secondary school, specialising in working with pupils who were statemented for Dyslexia and SPLD. We have taught students with disabilities such as ADHD, Aspergers, Dyslexia, Autism and others in the past. The beauty of Kip McGrath is that as teachers we can understand the problems that all pupils may have and ensure that the methods used to reach are appropriate to each individual child. Please contact us to discuss your child’s needs.

Will you come to my house to tutor my child?

All tuition happens within our fully equipped modern tuition centre. This enables us to provide the best facilities and teaching resources to meet the needs of your child.

How does the free education assessment work?

We offer a free, no obligation assessment and will discuss the results with you in detail to determine exactly how your child is performing. It is designed to highlight their strengths and weaknesses, for us to give honest feedback about where they are in relation to others. And yes, it is totally free!

Do I sign a contract?

There is no obligation or contract to attend for any period of time. If, for whatever reason (e.g. change of financial circumstances), you decide you are no longer able to attend, all we ask is 2 weeks notice.

How long is each does each lesson last?

Lessons at Kip McGrath Ashford last for 80 minutes and students attend for one lesson a week. Some children do attend more often, according to their needs, particularly in the run up to exams. Even young children attend for 80 minutes – their lessons are broken up into short activities, designed to help them maintain and improve their concentration.

When are the lessons held?

There are a variety of lesson times available after school from Monday to Thursday and Saturday morning.

How much homework will my child have to do?

Homework is an essential part of the Kip McGrath programme. Homework is generally limited to around half an hour each week and is designed to check their understanding. Naturally school homework has to come first in your child’s week. Our new program, INSIGHT, allows you to opt to do homework via the internet, either computer activities or written work.

How should I help my child while at Kip McGrath?

Make sure that they attend their tutoring sessions each week and complete the homework task – regularity is a major key to improving your child’s confidence and therefore their progress. We prefer for you to try to let them do their homework on their own, if they struggle we like to know and it boosts their confidence if they don’t need mum or dad around to help.
