Day 2 of our National Writing competition and today’s video is Sam Ruddock, a Paralympian who competed in the London 2012 Paralympics.

In December 2011, Sam was spotted whilst training by a sprints coach called Joe McDonnell who encouraged Sam to taking up sprinting. In March 2012, Sam was placed on the UK Athletics “Parallel Success” Talent Identification programme & the Paralympic Pathway was made available to him after being placed on the ‘long-list’ for London 2012. In April, Sam ran his first 100m & 200m race and was internationally classified by the International Paralympic Committee as a ‘T35’ athlete in May. His times improved through May till July until his selection to the Great Britain Paralympic team.

In his Paralympic debut in London, Sam ran a time of 13.92 in the T35 100m heats which left him only 0.600 seconds short of the final. Five days later, he returned to the Olympic Stadium in the T35 200m heats to run a new personal best of 28.75.
